ROUTE FORWARDING

Port forwarding is mainly used to make private network services accessible from the public internet — for example, hosting a website, accessing CCTV remotely, or enabling online gaming.

  • Hosting Servers                                                                                                                                                                    Run a web server, FTP server, or mail server inside your LAN and make it available publicly
  • Online Gaming

    • Many multiplayer games require specific ports to be open for smooth connectivity.

    • Port forwarding ensures game servers can communicate with your console or PC

      • VoIP and Video Conferencing

        • Applications like Skype or Zoom sometimes need forwarded ports for stable connections.

          Smart Home / IoT Devices

          • Access smart cameras, thermostats, or NAS devices remotely.

          • Example: Forward port 5000 to access Synology NAS dashboard from outside.

      • VPN Gateways

        • Forward VPN ports (like 1194 for OpenVPN) to allow secure remote connections into your private network.

In short: Port forwarding is a bridge between your private IP and the public internet, enabling remote access, hosting, and connectivity — but it must be secured carefully.
